Winter Severity Index Data Collection Project
Schools collecting data to study New Hampshire winters
Winter Severity Index Data Collection
The Winter Severity Index Data Collection Project (WSI) engages teachers, students, and individuals around the state to collect snow depth and temperature data from December 1 through April 30 (daily) in their schoolyard. Classrooms are provided a snow stake and thermometer to participate. The data collected is used to help biologists assess the winter severity for white-tailed deer. Throughout the data collection period, teachers will receive activities, videos, and handouts to share with their students. Any grade level can participate.
How to get involved
This data collection program is designed for teachers and students (but interested individuals can also participate). Timing for the program is important – you must sign up by October 31 in order to participate in the winter months. This allows time for you to receive and install the snow stake and thermometer in time for the first day of data collection.
